RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained at least 17 Palestinians in raids across the occupied Palestinian territory overnight Wednesday, Palestinian and Israeli sources reported.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said in a statement that five Palestinians were detained in the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron, mostly from the town of Yatta south of Hebron city.
The organization identified the Hebron-area detainees as Uday Masalmeh, Muhammad Manasra, Yazan Muhammad Yazan, Mahmoud Jaber Zein, and Zein Makhamreh.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that they had detained a total of 10 Palestinians overnight in the occupied West Bank, confirming the detention of three alleged “Hamas operatives” south of Hebron.
Meanwhile, Palestinian security sources said that three Palestinians were detained in the Bethlehem district in separate raids.
Abd al-Baset Muhammad Shahin, 24, was detained after Israeli forces raided and searched his house on one of the main streets of the city of Bethlehem.
The Israeli army confirmed one detention in Bethlehem. The city of Bethlehem is in Area A, the 18 percent of the West Bank officially under full Palestinian Authority control, although Israeli forces regularly breach the agreement under the Oslo Accords and conduct raids there.
The security sources added that Israeli forces detained Mahmoud Daamseh from the al-Duheisha refugee camp during overnight clashes in which Israeli forces fired tear gas and stun grenades.
They also reported the detention of a Palestinian identified as Muhammad Omar Taha Salah from the village of al-Khader west of Bethlehem, while Ibrahim Khalid Ziyadeh was delivered a summon notice to meet with the Israeli intelligence in southern Bethlehem.
In the Tulkarem district, PPS reported that Israeli forces detained Ammar Bassam Majdubeh, 30, and Uqab Jamal Zabadi, 24.
The Israeli army noted one detention east of the city of Tulkarem.
The organization added that four Palestinians were detained in occupied East Jerusalem, identifying them as Ubaida Amireh, Rami Fakhouri,
Ahmad al-Razem, and minor Youssef al-Shawish.
The Israeli army spokesperson also mentioned two detentions northeast of the city of Ramallah, one southeast of the city of Qalqiliya, and two detentions in unspecified locations.
According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians were being held in Israeli prisons as of May.

Israeli soldiers invaded, on Thursday at dawn, the West Bank city of Bethlehem, searched homes and kidnapped one Palestinian from his home. The army also invaded Deheishe refugee camp, south of the city and kidnapped another Palestinian, while a third was kidnapped in al-Khader town. One Palestinian was kidnapped near Qalqilia, in the northern part of the West Bank.
Media sources in Bethlehem city said several Israeli army vehicles invaded it, and kidnapped Abdul-Basset Mohammad Shahin, after storming his home and searching it, in the al-Karkafa area.
The soldiers also invaded Deheishe refugee camp, and clashed with dozens of local youths who hurled stones and empty bottles at the military vehicles, while the army fired gas bombs and concussion grenades.
In addition, the soldiers stormed and searched several homes in the refugee camp, and kidnapped one Palestinian whose identity remained unknown until the time of this report.
They also summoned another Palestinian, identified as Khaled Ziyada for interrogation in the Etzion military base, south of Bethlehem.
Also in Bethlehem, the soldiers invaded the al-Khader town, south of the city, and kidnapped a young man, identified as Mohammad Omar Salah, after storming his home and searching it.
In addition, several army vehicles invaded Azzoun town, east of the northern West Bank city of Qalqilia, searched homes and kidnapped one Palestinian, identified as Wael Nasser Sweidan.

JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- The Israeli police formed a new unit on Thursday to carry out detention across Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian prisoner rights group Addameer.
Muhammad Mahmoud, a lawyer with Addameer, said that the special unit for Jerusalem detention will be based in the al-Qishla center of the Old City in occupied East Jerusalem, and pointed out that the unit has already carried out detentions Thursday morning.
Mahmoud added that the Israeli police detained four Palestinian youths and identified them as Youssef Jawdat al-Shawish, Ahmad Yasser al-Razem, Rami al-Fakhouri, and Ubada Amireh.
Head of the Jerusalem Committee for Families of Prisoners, Amjad Abu Asab, said that Israeli forces also detained Muhammad Abu Shusheh, former prisoner Muhammad Nadi al-Hashlamun, Ahmad al-Shawish, and Hisham Muhammad Bsheiti.
Majdi al-Abbasi of the Wadi Hilweh Information Center confirmed that Israeli forces and intelligence raided the Ein al-Luza neighborhood of Silwan village near occupied East Jerusalem, and raided several houses, detaining Ziad al-Qaq and teenager Mahdi Youssef Abu Diab.
Al-Abbasi said that clashes erupted late Wednesday, and that Israeli forces used live fire, tear-gas, rubber-coated steel bullets and sprayed ‘skunk water’ randomly towards houses.
Israeli forces also detained photojournalist Iyad al-Tawil and his father after raiding his house in occupied East Jerusalem.
Israeli forces conduct near nightly raids across occupied East Jerusalem and the West bank, with a weekly average of 88 raids since the start of 2016, according to UN documentation.
