BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Two Palestinian youths were injured and two others were detained in the predawn hours Thursday morning when Israeli forces raided Aida refugee camp in the southern occupied West Bank district of Bethlehem.

Clashes erupted between local Palestinian youth and Israeli forces after Israeli forces stormed the camp, raiding several houses.

Witnesses reported that Israeli soldiers opened heavy fire and launched stun grenades and tear gas canisters after youths surrounded them.

Two unidentified youths were injured with live fire to the legs, locals said, with one critically injured and the other sustaining moderate injuries.

Locals told Ma’an Israeli forces detained former prisoners Anas Nabhan al-Umour, 24, and Muhammad Ahmad al-Amir, 27, after raiding their houses, and briefly held Mustafa and Ibrahim Muhammad Abu Srour.
An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed to Ma’an that two Palestinians were detained in the Bethlehem area overnight.

Al-Umour and al-Amir join some 7,000 Palestinians currently held in Israeli jails, many of whom were detained during the near-daily raids carried out by Israeli military forces on Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps.

Such raids are often carried out in areas under full Palestinian jurisdiction, such as the Aida camp, and frequently lead to clashes between Palestinian residents and military forces.

Palestinian prisoners’ rights group Addameer estimates that 40 percent of the Palestinian male population have been detained by Israel at some point.
