RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained ten Palestinians during raids across the occupied Palestinian territory on Thursday, including two Hamas leaders.
According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS), six Palestinians were detained from the Ramallah and al-Bireh district. The group identified the detainees as Walid Sameh al-Rimawi, 37, Ramadan Hussein Atta, 31, Amr Yamed Qarabsa, 20, Ahmad Najib Mafarjeh, 55, Saed Abu al-Bahaa and Hussein Abu Kweik.
Ahmad Adnan Irhayyil, 25, from the town of Kafr Dan near Jenin, was detained by Israeli forces in front of Zaatara military checkpoint in southern Nablus.
Muhammad Youssef al-Warasneh, 18, was detained from the Shyoukh village in Hebron.
Two Palestinians were detained from Jerusalem, on of whom was identified as Bassel Abu Diab, 27, PPS said.
The homes of Hamas leaders Hussein Abu Kweik and Saed Abu Bahaa in the central West Bank city of al-Bireh were raided and searched by Israeli forces during the military operations, locals told Ma’an,
Abu Kweik is a former prisoner and leader of Hamas who was detained several times by Israeli authorities. He is also the survivor of a 2003 assassination attempt that claimed the lives of his first wife and three children.
Abu Bahaa, a spokesperson for Hamas in the West Bank, was just released from Israeli prison two months ago.
An Israeli spokesperson told Ma’an there were five arrests throughout the West Bank on Thursday, all of whom were detained over “suspected illegal activity.”
Israeli forces regularly carry out raids on Palestinian communities, including in areas under full Palestinian jurisdiction and in direct violation of the Oslo Accords. Israeli forces have carried out a weekly average of 99 raids in the occupied Palestinian territory since the beginning of this year, according to UN documentation.
According to prisoners' rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, and nearly 40 percent of the Palestinian male population has been detained at some point in their lives.
