BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces on Tuesday detained 17 Palestinians during military raids carried out overnight Monday in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
In the southern West Bank district of Hebron, that Palestinian Prisoners' Society said that Israeli forces raided several neighborhoods across Hebron city, detaining four.
The four were identified by the prisoner’s society as Muhammad Hussein al-Jaabari, Idris Hasan al-Jaabari, Taha Husni al-Sharif, and Hashim Jumaa al-Atrash.
Locals added that the Israeli military temporarily set up checkpoints at the entrances to the Hebron-area towns of Sair, Yatta, and Halhoul, checking identity cards of Palestinians passing in and out.
In the Bethlehem district, Israeli forces detained 16-year-old Qussai Mahmoud Thawabta,16, and Hani Abdullah Taqatqa, 39, from Beit Fajjar.
Shadi Khalid Khatatba and Fahd Awad Khatatba from the Bethlehem-area village of Beit Furik were detained also inside Israel, according to the Palestinian Prisoners' Society.
Adib al-Ghalban, 26, was detained from his house in Qalqiliya, the society added.
Israeli forces detained 15-year-old Aboud Muhammad Khalil Hamad from the Jenin-area village of al-Araqa after searching his family’s home, locals told Ma’an, adding that Ammar Ibrahim Shalash Hmour, 28, was detained from his home in the Jaba village, also near Jenin.
The Palestinian Prisoners' Society identified three other Jenin-area detainees as Muhammad Bassam Shafee Hamad, 17, Muhammad Nasri Abu al-Ruz, Ubadah Iyad Hamad, 16.
In Tulkarem in the northern West Bank, the society said two 14-year-old Palestinians were detained, identifying them as Diyaa Muhammad Fuqaha and Omar Jamal Fuqaha.
In occupied East Jerusalem’s Old City, Israeli forces detained Taha Hussni al-Shareef and Hashem Jumaa al-Atrash, both 19 years old.
An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed 13 Palestinians detained overnight, including three suspected Hamas operatives in the Qalqilya area and one in Hebron.
The remaining ten were detained for suspected involvement in “illegal activities,” according to the spokesperson.
Israeli military forces regularly carry out search and detention raids in Palestinian towns and village, including those under full Palestinian jurisdiction.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported an average of 88 raids per week during 2015.
Nearly 7,000 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli jails, around 450 of whom are children.
