QALQILYA (Ma’an) -- An Israeli settler was arrested on Wednesday after throwing an ax through the windshield of a Palestinian vehicle east of the occupied West Bank city of Qalqiliya, Israeli police said.
Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said that the ax struck the windshield of a Palestinian vehicle driving between the village of Azzun and the illegal Israeli settlement of Karnie Shomron.
A resident of the illegal settlement believed to be responsible was later detained by Israeli police, the spokesperson added.
No injuries were reported.
Israeli settlers living illegally in the occupied Palestinian territory frequently carry out attacks on Palestinians and their property, with the UN documenting over 200 such attacks last year.
Unrest that escalated in the territory in October has raised tensions in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, where a series of attacks carried out by individual Palestinians have continued to target Israeli military and settlements this month.
While the majority of Palestinians have been shot dead on scene while carrying or attempting to carry out an attack, the shoot-to-kill policy implemented by Israeli forces on Palestinians has raised criticism that Israelis are not prosecuted for carrying out similar crimes.
