HEBRON (Ma’an) -- An 18-year-old Palestinian woman was detained near the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron on suspicion of her intention to stab Israeli border guards at a checkpoint, Israeli police said.
Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said in a statement that a Palestinian approached a line of border police at the Tzalbanit checkpoint, raising suspicion from the forces.
Israeli border guards instructed the young woman to stop for an inspection, at which point they spotted a large knife in her hand, al-Samri said.
The forces then raised their weapons and detained her for questioning. No gunshots were fired during the incident, al-Samri said, adding that the 18-year-old was from the village of Beit Fajjar.
Several alleged, attempted, and actual attacks have been recently carried out by Palestinian individuals against Israeli military and civilians.
The majority of the at least 111 Palestinians to be killed since Oct. 1 were shot dead during such attacks. Nineteen Israelis have been killed in the same time period.
Hebron, the largest city in the occupied West Bank, has borne the brunt of violence over the past month, with at least a third of Palestinians shot dead by Israeli forces residents of the district.
Two Palestinian teenagers were shot and killed by Israeli forces in Hebron’s Tel Rumeida neighborhood overnight Thursday after the Israeli army said the two stabbed a soldier in the face.
Palestinians living in Hebron have come under particularly severe forms of collective punishment following such attacks according to rights groups, including mass detentions, house-to-house raids, home demolitions, and the closure of towns and villages.
Critics have argued the absence of leadership by Palestinian political parties in recent attacks -- the majority carried out by individuals -- has influenced Israel to implement measures on Palestinians collectively.
