JERUSALEM (Ma'an ) -- A Palestinian was shot and killed after opening fire on Israeli soldiers stationed near the Hizma military checkpoint north of Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank that left two injured, the Israeli army and emergency services said.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that forces opened fire on a Palestinian man after he exited his vehicle and opened fire on the forces.

The spokesperson confirmed the suspect's death and said an Israeli soldier was shot in the upper body, adding that one bystander was injured.

The Palestinian liaison department identified the Palestinian as Mazin Hasan Ureiba from Abu Dis.

Ureiba was an officer in the Palestinian Authority general intelligence service and a father of four, sources told Ma'an.
Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom said that paramedics arrived to the scene and treated one victim who was in severe condition.

Israeli media reported that the bystander was a 47-year-old Israeli man left with critical injuries, while the soldier received a gunshot wound to the hand.

Photos released following the incident suggest the attack took place down the road from the Hizma military checkpoint at a roundabout that has operated as a flying checkpoint in recent weeks, and sees regular presence by Israeli military.

The attack is the latest in an escalation of violence that began in October and has continued full-fledged into the first days of December.

Two Palestinians were killed in separate incidents on Tuesday. Maram Ramiz Hassouna, 19, was shot dead at a military checkpoint in Tulkarem after the Israeli army said she tried to stab a soldier.
Hassouna was killed hours after 16-year-old Maram Ramiz Hassouna was shot when the Israeli army said he attempted to stab a settler at the Gush Etzion junction.

No Israelis were injured in either of the alleged attacks.

At least 106 Palestinians have been killed since Oct. 1. The majority were shot by Israeli forces or settlers while carrying out alleged, attempted, and actual attacks on Israeli military and civilians.
Nineteen Israelis have been killed in attacks during the same time period.

The town of Hizma -- completely surrounded on the west side by the Israeli separation wall -- holds a main entrance point into neighboring occupied East Jerusalem.

The town is separated by an Israeli settlement from the Shufat refugee camp, where clashes erupted between Palestinian residents and Israeli forces Wednesday after the demolition of a home in the camp belonging to a man who carried out a deadly attack in Jerusalem last year.

Two Israelis were wounded in a shooting attack at the West Bank checkpoint of Hizma Thursday morning. A 47-year-old Israeli was seriously wounded and a 20-year-old Israeli soldier was lightly wounded. The Palestinian assailant was shot and killed at the scene.

According to Palestinian sources, the assailant behind the attack is Mazan Hasan Ariva, an intelligence officer in the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian Authority and Palestinian security forces have yet to respond to the report.

During a routine car inspection, the assailant got out of his car and shot a soldier at the checkpoint. A passerby, presumably Palestinian, was wounded by the gunfire as well.

According to Magen David Adom emergency responders, shots were fired at a car near the checkpoint. The wounded Israeli was shot in the upper body, and was evacuated to Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Kerem in Jerusalem.

Israeli security forces clashed with Palestinians in East Jerusalem on Wednesday morning after entering the Shoafat refugee camp to demolish a terrorist's home.

On Sunday, two successive stabbing attacks were carried out in Jerusalem leaving a border police officer and a 30-year-old woman wounded.

This is a developing story.
