RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities released Palestinian MP of the Hebron district Nayif al-Rujoub from the Ofer jail near Ramallah on Thursday after being held for a year under administrative detention.

Al-Rujoub was taken to the Palestine Medical Center directly after his release for medical tests.

The Hamas-affiliated MP was detained in the summer of 2014 during a detention campaign carried out by Israeli forces across the occupied West Bank.

He was one of hundreds of Palestinians to be detained during the Israeli campaign known as "Operation Brother's Keeper," which was allegedly carried out in search of three missing teenage Israeli settlers last summer, lasting until June 30 when their bodies were found.

Most of those detained during the campaign were members of Hamas, including leaders and members of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), Palestine's parliament.

Al-Rujoub served a four-year term in Israeli jail between 2006 and 2010, Israeli forces detaining the MP reportedly in retaliation for the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit weeks prior by armed groups in the Gaza Strip.

During his most recent detention, Al-Rujoub was one of over 400 Palestinians currently being held in Israeli jails under administrative detention.

Under administrative detention, a procedure dating back to the British mandate of Palestine from 1920 to 1948, prisoners can be held for indefinitely renewable six-month periods without charge.

Several members of the Palestinian parliament remain in Israeli prison, many of whom have been held under administrative detention, most recently PLC member Khalida Jarrar who has been held since April 2 despite pushes by the international community for her release.
