Description
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained nine Palestinians from across the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan late Thursday, as well as another from the Wadi al-Joz neighborhood north of the Old City.
Israeli forces raided the Wadi Hilweh neighborhood in Silwan and detained the head of the Wadi Hilweh Information Center Jawad Siyam, in addition to Yazan Siyam, Muntaser Faraj, and Mahmoud Ghaith.
A lawyer for the Addameer prisoner rights group, Muhammad Mahmoud, told Ma'an that the Israeli police detained four Palestinians for "assaulting a settler in late September," and they were taken to the Russian Compound police station for interrogation.
The Wadi Hilweh Information Center is a center for local activists who oppose the expansion of Jewish settlements in the neighborhood, land confiscation, home demolition, and the Israeli occupation more broadly.
A unit of undercover Israeli police also detained five Palestinians from the al-Thawri neighborhood in Silwan late Thursday. Al-Thawri has been the site of clashes for the last two days since Israeli soldiers raided a home and killed Mutaz Hijazi, who they said had shot a right-wing Jewish extremist earlier in the evening.
Israeli forces also reportedly detained a Palestinian late Thursday from the Wadi al-Joz neighborhood of Jerusalem after "severely beating him," although no further details were given.
