The family of slain the Palestinian man, who was shot and killed by Israeli military fire, late on Monday [June 2, 2014], denied and strongly condemned Israeli allegations that he was armed and fired at the soldiers before he was gunned down.

The victim, ‘Ala Mohammad Odeh, 30 years of age, is a married father of two children. He was shot at the Za’tara roadblock, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

The army claimed Odeh shot an Israeli soldier, wounding him in the leg, before the soldiers shot him dead.

His family said that Odeh went to the roadblock to receive a shipment of cellphones for his store, and that he decided to cross the roadblock on foot to save time as the roadblock was jammed.

He then asked the taxi driver, who transported him, to wait near the roadblock, and tried to cross it on foot, the Ma'an News Agency has reported.

The army withheld Odeh’s body, and said they would hand it over to the family later on.

[Monday Night, June 2, 2014] A young Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli army fire at the Za’tara roadblock, near the northern West Bank city of Nablus. Israeli military sources claimed the man opened fire at the soldiers, wounding one of them before they shot him dead.

Israeli publication Yedioth Ahronoth said one soldier suffered a mild-to-moderate injury, after being shot in his leg, during a fire exchange with the Palestinian.

It added that, according to an initial investigation by the army, an armed Palestinian approached the soldiers and opened fire on them, wounding one member of the Nahal Brigade, and that the soldiers returned fire killing the Palestinian.

Later on, dozens of soldiers arrived at the scene, and declared the area a closed military zone, preventing the Palestinians from entering it. The wounded Israeli soldier was moved to the Rabin Medical Center, in Petah Tikva.

The Ma'an News Agency has reported that the soldiers also prevented Palestinian medics from providing medical treatment to the Palestinian who apparently was still alive.

Approximately an hour prior to the attack, at least twenty Israeli military vehicles accompanied buses carrying settlers invaded Nablus, as the settlers visited the Joseph Tomb near the Balata refugee camp, east of Nablus.

Maan said the soldiers invaded also various areas in Nablus, especially near Balata, and that the army fired gas bombs and rubber-coated metal bullets at Palestinian youths who threw stones at them.

Last Friday, May 30, the army claimed the foiling of a “suicide bombing attack” at the Za’tara roadblock, and said the soldiers arrested a Palestinian concealing an explosive charge under a long coat he wore.
