An unprecedented demonstration has taken place in Tel Aviv, as thousands of African asylum seekers marched through the city on Saturday, December 21st, 2013.
Last Sunday, a group of 150 refugees left the newly constructed open-air Israeli prison in the Negev Desert, and began marching towards Jerusalem, the Real News Network reports.
After marching for two days, through Be'er Sheva, and spending the night at a small Kibbutz inspired by their actions, the protesters made it to Jerusalem, only to be met by Israeli police.
The new jail, called Holot, is the largest prison for refugees in the developed world.
Upon international dissent, the Israeli government decided to open the jail, asserting that it is not really a prison. However, refugees are required to sign in three times a day and are not allowed to leave, in the night.
