Description
QALQILIYA (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces raided the house of a Palestinian man currently imprisoned in Israeli jails early Tuesday and interrogated his family, his wife said.
Margaret al-Raee, the wife of prisoner Maher al-Raee, said that Israeli forces raided her house at 3 a.m., causing extensive damage to her property and belongings.
During the course of the raid, Israeli forces interrogated her about her husband and their family, and issued a summons order to her son, Mujab Maher, 24, to meet with Israeli intelligence officers next week.
Maher al-Raee was detained by Israeli forces for being affiliated to the left wing Palestinian political party, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and sentenced to 13 years in an Israeli prison.
An Israeli military spokeswoman had no information about the raid, but did say that one Palestinian was detained in raids overnight in the same area.
Over 5,200 Palestinians were being held in Israeli jails as of Oct. 2013, according to the Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs.
Another 1,280 are in Israeli prisons for being inside Israel without permits.
Since 1967, more than 650,000 Palestinians have been detained by Israel, representing 20 percent of the total population and 40 percent of all males in the occupied territories.
Under international law, it is illegal to transfer prisoners outside of the occupied territory in which they are detained, and the families of Palestinian prisoners' face many obstacles in obtaining permits to see their imprisoned relatives.
