Israeli sources have reported that one Israeli was killed and four injured in a stabbing attack in Haifa. The alleged assailant was shot and killed at the scene.

The alleged perpetrator, identified as Yithro Shahin, from the city of Shefa-Amr in the Galilee region, was shot and killed at the scene after he stabbed five Israelis, killing 70-year-old Hassan Karim Dahamshe.

The Arab 48 news website quoted the Israeli police who said that the accused, Shahin returned to Israel one week ago after spending months abroad.

The Times of Israel quoted the alleged perpetrator’s family who stated that the young man suffered from a mental illness and did not have nationalistic motives for the attack.

Shahin’s uncle, Roni Haris told the Israeli Y-Net News that he is a “disabled IDF veteran and his other uncle is a reserve soldier,” adding that the family is not “hostile to the state.”

The incident took place at a central bus terminal in Haifa, where a 70-year-old man was killed and at least four others were injured before the attacker was killed by a civilian security guard.

Israeli National News reported that medics attended to the four wounded Israelis and transported them to Rambam Hospital and added that the assailant was “eliminated by civilians and soldiers.”

Among the injured were a woman and a man in their thirties, and a 15-year-old boy, all of whom suffered severe injuries.

In addition to the reported attacker who was fatally shot, another person was shot and sustained life-threatening wounds.

An investigation is underway to determine whether this individual was shot accidentally or if they were involved in the incident.

Following the incident, Israeli police closed all roads leading to the scene and advised people to stay away to allow medics and police to respond to the unfolding events.

Israeli Police Commissioner, Danny Levi arrived at the scene and stated that the investigation would determine the identity of the attacker.

He also mentioned that the police had installed roadblocks and were working to secure the area to ensure that the assailant was not assisted by another person.
