The Israeli army found the body of a 14-year-old Israeli boy who went missing on Friday morning, after he went out to herd sheep in the West Bank.
The IDF, Shin Bet security service and the police reported that the victim, Binyamin Ahimeir of the Malachei HaShalom settlement in the Binyamin regional council, was killed in a terror attack and that a search for the perpetrators is underway. His body was found near the settlement using a police drone.
A preliminary investigation found that Ahimeir was killed by a bladed weapon. It is unclear, however, whether an altercation proceeded the assault or if it was a surprise attack. According to the Israeli army, the forces continue to gather intelligence concerning possible suspects who live in nearby Palestinian villages.
Groups of settlers are reportedly burning houses and property in several West Bank villages, near where Ahimeir's body was found. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, three Palestinians were wounded in the village of Al-Mughayyir and five were wounded in the village of Duma, including one who is in a critical state.
Ahimeir's friends, who live in the Malachei Hashalom settlement, say they woke him up on Friday around 6 A.M. so that he take the sheep out and went back to sleep
He was supposed to return to the settlement around 9 A.M. but never came back. A broken hoe was found several kilometers from the settlement around 12 P.M., and some sheep came back to the settlement on their own.
Shaul Golan, a photojournalist for the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, also reported of being attacked by settlers in al-Mughayyir. According to Golan, as he was taking pictures inside one of the burned houses in the village, he saw some 30 shirtless and masked individuals approaching the place.
"Some of them were in military uniforms," he says, adding that "they ran inside screaming, grabbed and pulled me and my bag. They burned the place and took away my cameras while shouting at me: 'You are Jewish, aren't you ashamed?'" According to Golan, his equipment was then taken by the settlers and set on fire.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed in a statement that Ahimeir was murdered, and that Israeli forces were on their way to catch the murderers and those who collaborated with them "as we do with anyone who harms Israeli citizens."
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has condemned the acts of revenge performed in the West Bank by Jewish settlers, writing on X that he asks the public to "let the security forces act quickly in their search for the terrorists. Acts of revenge will make our forces' jobs harder, do not take the law into your own hands."
Gallant added that Israel's security establishment "will get to the killers and use the full legal measures against them, as we do with any terrorist or killer."
On Friday, clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers in the Palestinian village of Al-Mughayir during searches for the boy. One Palestinian was killed and 25 were wounded by Israeli military fire, while three Israeli soldiers were lightly wounded from rocks thrown at them.
Last year, the government announced its intention to legalize the Malachei HaShalom settlement, along with nine other illegal Israeli West Bank outposts. Malachei HaShalom is located near many other outposts, and its residents take part in frequent clashes between settlers and local Palestinians.
