Released Hamas hostage Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, described Tuesday at a widely attended press conference outside Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital how her terrorist captors took her by motorcycle from Kibbutz Nir Oz to the Gaza Strip on October 7 and into a “spiderweb” of tunnels, and accused Israel’s leadership of failures that made her and others into “scapegoats.”

She said her abductors beat her on the way to Gaza, but that she was treated well by her captors.

The live press conference on Tuesday with released hostage Yocheved Lifshitz became a PR nightmare for Israel, according to Times of Israel. She described good treatment from her captors, medical care, and clean conditions. “They were very friendly to us. They took care of all of our needs,” she said. The Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation said that the press conference had been a “mistake,” and that international media were now reporting on Hamas’ kindness.

What We Can Learn From Released Hamas Hostage Yocheved Lifshitz

Yocheved Lifshitz just went through trauma that few in the world can comprehend. Especially in these first days as a free woman, especially as she picks up what is left of the shattered pieces of her life, we should not judge the way she processes it

Speaking from Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital, she [Yocheved Lifshitz] recounted her capture and beating at the hands of the terrorists as she was taken into Gaza’s tunnel system, but spoke sympathetically of her captors as well. The Hamas members made conversation. They fed the hostages from the same food they ate. They gave them shampoo and cleaned the toilets. They regularly brought doctors to them.

Yocheved Lifshitz just went through trauma that few in the world can comprehend. Especially in these first days as a free woman, especially as she picks up what is left of the shattered pieces of her life, we should not judge the way she processes it.
