Israel attacked Hamas installations in the Gaza Strip on Friday, after dozens of Palestinians protested and clashed with troops near the border. During the earlier clashes at the border, the military used riot-dispersal methods, such as tear gas, as well as live fire. Incendiary balloons launched from Gaza caused two fires to break out near the border in Israel.
Israel Defense Forces said drones attacked two targets located next to where rioting was taking place and a tank shelled a third, located next to a site where troops had recently been fired on.
A 25-year-old Palestinian was killed Tuesday by IDF fire during near the border fence. The Palestinian Health Ministry he had been struck in the head by live fire. Nine other protesters were hurt in clashes that day, one seriously.
The past two weeks have seen a renewal of Palestinian protests at the Gaza border, five years after the "March of Return" that saw thousands of participants. Palestinian organizations in Gaza announced that they would renew the protests last month.
The government announced on Tuesday that it would keep the Erez Crossing, the primary crossing for people, shut until further notice. The decision was made following demonstrations by hundreds of Palestinians in protest of Jewish worshipers entering the Temple Mount compound on Rosh Hashanah.
Last week, a routine closure was imposed on the West Bank and the crossings to Israel from the Gaza Strip for the holiday, and the Erez Crossing still hasn't been reopened. Every year, the Israeli army imposes such closures on the West Bank and Gaza Strip for the Jewish High Holy Days, Purim, Passover, and any Election Day.
