The Israel Police unit responsible for investigating offenses by officers has opened a probe into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and injuring of an unarmed Palestinian in the back by Border Police Monday in the village of Beita.
The victim, Ameed Beni Shamsa, a 33-year-old father of five, was critically injured in the shooting.
Saeed Beni Shamsa, Ameed’s brother, told Haaretz that his brother was in the area because that is where is employed. He said eyewitnesses told him that his brother got out of his car to help someone who had been shot and injured a short time earlier and was then shot at himself. An undercover Border Police unit operating in the area had come to arrest a wanted person on the spot. The police said on Monday that "the circumstances of the case are being investigated."
Saeed Beni Shamsa said the family had yet to receive a reply to its request that Ameed be transferred to a hospital in Israel. His shooting was captured on video and circulated on social media.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health said Monday that in addition to the Beni Shamsa, five others were injured in the village by live fire. The Border Police reported that villagers threw cinderblocks and stones at the forces who responded by dispersing the demonstrators, including with the use of live fire, and acknowledged that they had caused injuries.
