Israeli soldiers attacked, on Friday evening, a peaceful sit-in against Israel’s policy of forced eviction, in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem, local sources reported.

Participants demonstrated non-violently, in the weekly sit-in condemning Israel’s eviction of Palestinian families from occupied East Jerusalem, carrying the Palestinian flag and banners denouncing the crimes of the occupation.

Soldiers assaulted at least one of the demonstrators and abducted four, two of whom were identified as Muhammad Abu al-Hummus, a well know Jerusalemite activist, and the Palestinian youth Thaer al-Qawasmi.


In a recent report from the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN experts stated that the July 11, 2023 expulsion of the Ghaith-Sub Laban family from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem “may amount to a war crime of forcible transfer.”

The experts added that “we have repeatedly said, forced evictions of Palestinians in east Jerusalem are part of Israel’s apartheid machinery at work.”

The report showed that in occupied East Jerusalem, at least 150 Palestinian families are at risk of forced displacement by Israeli authorities and settler organizations.

The report concluded that “Israel’s transfer of its own population into the occupied territory is a gross violation of international humanitarian law and a war crime.”
