Description
NABLUS (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained two Hamas leaders on Thursday from the northern city of Tubas, Palestinian security sources told Ma'an.
Soldiers entered Tubas at 1 a.m. and detained Faze Sawaftah, 41, and Nader Sawaftah, 37, after raiding their homes.
An Israeli army spokesman said that two men had been arrested by security forces and taken for questioning.
The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs issued a report on Wednesday which said Israel was escalating a campaign of arrests against Palestinian leaders.
Twenty-seven Palestinian lawmakers are being held in Israeli jails. Only Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti and PFLP leader Ahmad Saadat have been sentenced, the report said. All other detainees are being held under administrative detention.
There are currently 307 prisoners in administrative detention, without charge, in Israeli jails. The practice was started under British mandate rule.
Around 40 percent of Palestinian men living in the occupied territories have been detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
